Legendary Canadian new wave synthpop band The Spoons played a free concert at Lakeshore Mardi Gras at Colonel Samuel Smith Park on Friday night.

As a Canadian, I grew up listening to The Spoons and while I assumed that they were quite popular, I really don’t have a clue as to how far-reaching their popularity is beyond Canada.

All I can say is that being able to attend a free concert from such a great band is really a treat.

We noted that the keyboardist looks younger than we do, so he’s probably not the original keyboardist. He’s also been spotted playing as part of another band, Unbuttoned.

Gord Deppe, is the lead vocalist and original founding member of the band.

Like I said, I don’t know how well this band is known outside Canada, so if you haven’t heard of them, you should really check them out.

Romantic Traffic: The song that we looked forward to the most.

The Spoons’ Greatest Hits

Romantic Traffic is a huge Canadian favourite, especially of life-long Torontonians like myself, since it was filmed in the Toronto subway system. We get a little bit nostalgic about those old red Gloucester trains. Also, check out the epic security mirror selfie at 2:12.

Nova Heart was the first single to appear on the Canadian charts, and is probably one of their most popular songs.

If you like Depeche Mode, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, and other similar new wave synthpop acts, you really need to consider adding The Spoons to your collection. It’s never too late!
